About Lough Arrow Complex SAC

The Lough Arrow Complex Special Area of Conservation encompasses Lough Arrow, a large limestone lake, along with its surrounding habitats including bogs, wet grasslands, and upland areas predominantly located across County Sligo and County Roscommon, Ireland. This SAC is designated under the EU Habitats Directive to protect several priority habitats and species. Lough Arrow itself is a deep, oligotrophic lake supporting important aquatic vegetation and diverse fish species like brown trout and Arctic char. Surrounding the lake are extensive raised bogs, wet heaths, and other wetland habitats that provide shelter and breeding grounds for rare bird species such as the Greenland white-fronted goose and hen harrier. The landscape is characterized by gently rolling hills and undisturbed natural features, offering opportunities for wildlife watching, angling, and tranquil outdoor enjoyment. While there are no large developed recreational facilities within the complex, visitors interested in nature study, birding, and ecological research find Lough Arrow Complex to be an accessible yet relatively remote natural gem. Its conservation status also means that activities are managed to maintain habitat integrity, allowing the continued presence of rare flora and fauna. Local communities around the lake benefit from sustainable tourism, especially fishing and guided wildlife tours. The area's rich ecological mosaic and geological backdrop make it a significant site in Ireland’s network of protected places with considerable appeal to conservation-minded outdoor enthusiasts and naturalists.
